Sildenafil is an oral medication primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. It is most famously known by the brand name Viagra. Sildenafil belongs to a class of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors.
When a man experiences ED, it means there is inadequate blood flow to the penis, making it difficult to achieve and maintain an erection. Sildenafil works by inhibiting the action of the enzyme PDE5, which is responsible for breaking down a substance called cGMP. By blocking PDE5, Sildenafil allows cGMP levels to increase, leading to improved blood flow to the penis when sexually aroused. This can help men achieve and maintain erections during sexual activity.
Sildenafil is typically taken on an as-needed basis, usually about 30 minutes to an hour before sexual activity. It should be used as prescribed by a healthcare provider. It's important to note that Sildenafil does not cause automatic erections; sexual arousal is still necessary for it to be effective.
In addition to treating ED, Sildenafil is sometimes prescribed to manage pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in some cases. As with any medication, potential side effects and drug interactions should be discussed with a healthcare professional before use.
